Abstract : This paper examined the influence of sleep quality on coping skills and logical reasoning of university academic
staff in South-West, Nigeria. Three hundred and sixty university academic staff in South-West, Nigeria was selected through
the stratified random sampling technique. Demographic Data Inventory (DDI), Coping Strategies Inventory – Short Form
(CSI – SF), Logical and Abstract Reasoning Test (LART), and the Sleep Inventory (SI) were used for data collection.
Analysis of variance and Pearson r were used to analyze the three hypotheses formulated at the .05 significance level.
Results revealed that sleep quality had significant effects on coping skills (F(2, 339) = 189.334, p < .05) and logical reasoning
(F(2, 339) = 246.123, p < .05) .There were significant positive relationships between sleep quality and logical reasoning (r =
.750, p < .05), coping skills (r = .709, p < .05); and coping skills and logical reasoning (r = .579, p < .05). It was concluded
that the quality of sleep has an effect on both coping skills and logical reasoning and that sleep is a non-negotiable biological
necessity because it is a life support system and not an optional lifestyle luxury.
