Abstract : Abstract - English in India was introduced long back and since independence it has been an associate official language of India and the medium of instruction. In spite of thatit has been observed that competence is not the same overall. There are mistakes observed and most, if not all of the errors are due to the interference of the first languages and direct translations. The problem with India is that there is not one single mother tongue. Therefore the problem of interference becomes complex in case of English in India because of the interference caused by a large number of first languages. It, therefore, becomes necessary to use contrastive Analysis to compare their English with their mother tongues, if effective teaching plans need to be implemented successfully. Comparing the two languages will help teachers spot the errorscaused due to interference and improve the teaching materials and design syllabus in a way to avoid those errors. Keywords - Contrastive Analysis, Interference, Second Language, Errors, Syntax, Teaching Techniques.
