Assessing Taiwan’s “New Southbound” Policy and the China Factor

Abstract
As part of President Tsai Ing-wen's efforts to give strength and diversify Taiwan's economy, the "New Southbound Policy" aims to secure new regional partners in South and Southeast Asia. Constructing upon the policies of previous administrations, the "New Southbound Policy" will also attempt to diminish Taiwan's economic reliance on the mainland by building anlarge network of cultural and interpresonal relationships throughout the region. This article will examine the new policy in the context of Taiwan's overall foreign policy objectives. Index Terms - New Southbound, ASEAN, HEDGING, FTA
