Acehnese Students’ Ways of Addressing EFL Teachers and its Meaning for Teachers’ Professional Identity
This paper presents how Acehnese students addressed EFL teachers and how the teachers viewed the addressin
relation to their professional identities. By using a qualitative approach, two classroom and school observations and one
semi-structured interview were conducted with seven teachers in seven different schools. Data were analysed through open
coding. The findings showed that most of teachers were addressed with more than one title in English or Indonesian. The
teachers suggested that there were various reasons why they were addressed in certain ways by their students. They also
expressed what these forms of address meant to their professional identities.
