The Role of Social Media in Arab Spring Revolutions

The significant development of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) had an influence on society. The big revolution in media around the world is the subject of study by scholars in multiple fields. Radio, TV and the Internet function as tools of social and political change by connecting communities and educating the youth. Social media networks are one of these social communication technologies that have affected society. This study aims to explore the role of social media networks in driving the events of the “Arab Spring.” A content analysis is conducted to generate main themes for data collections, which were peer-reviewed article were retrieved from “SocINDEX with Full Text” (a sociology research database). The outcomes of this study show that social media networks, especially Facebook and Twitter, are the owner of the first spark of the Arab Spring revolutions, and how these networks help activists in Arab Spring revolutions to protest and express their outrage. However, other points of view discuss that there is a great exaggeration in the role that social media played in the Arab Spring revolutions, especially in the Western media. Still, people in Arab Spring countries were outrage from their authoritarian regimes in poverty and destitution.
