Language Features of Audio Tour Description in English

Abstract
This research aims to study English language features of audio tour descriptions in English, comparing to English features of written descriptions of tourist attraction, focusing on the palaces. The researchers collected data from 20 audio scripts from the websites providing audio tour guides about palaces and 20 descriptions of palaces in Wikipedia. A total of 40 texts were analyzed automatically by the online program named Coh-Metrix to distinguish the differences of the language used to describe the palaces between the two different modes of communication. The researcher used the T-test to compare mean statistics to determine the differences of the independent variables. The results show the distinguishing features of each type of data analyzed, which reflects the differences of communication channels between writing and speaking. This study also found some features used in audio tour description to demonstrate informal speech and to create interaction between speakers. However, the use of English features of written texts can also be found in audio tour descriptions, suggesting a combination of written features in audio tour descriptions.
