Adoption of Rice Cultivation Technologies in Tonlesap Plain of Cambodia
Abstract
This paper examines the adoption of rice farming technologies on farmer’s technical efficiency in Tonle Sap
plainof Cambodia. It also provides the factors that influenced technical efficiency in this study area. Using the socioeconomic
surveys of 1944 Cambodian households conducted in 2014, 2015 and farmer’s record book of 408 households
conducted in 2017, 2018,and the Stochastic frontier analysis (SFA) is employed for analysis. From the Maximum likelihood
estimation (MEL) of the Tran-slog production function and technical inefficiency model, the result reveals that the overall
technical efficiency is estimated at 79.56 percent on average while the mean of technical efficiency is recorded at 75.56
percent for non-adopter and 98.45 percent for adopters. It means that rice production in Tonlesap plain is producing under
the efficient frontier for both groups of farmers. Fertilizer and pesticide, seed, and labor have a positiveand significant effect
on rice output per household. However, these three inputs are decreased in the square term, implying that when all
production variables are increased by a certain percentage resulting in a less-than-proportional increase in output. Moreover,
land, adoption status, access to water, and location of farmland have a positive effect on technical efficiency in Cambodian
rice production.
