Residents' Value Assessment for the Machine Separation Services of Household Kitchen Waste in Japan: A Choice Experiment Approach

Abstract
Abstract – This study aims to estimate residents' value assessment by estimating their willingness to pay for the machine separation services of household kitchen waste source and to provide input for the introduction of food waste machine sorting services. We used conjoint analysis to assess multi-attributes. We conducted a questionnaire survey using a choice experiment question format to assess the preferences and willingness to pay of the residents. The analysis showed that the amount of willingness to pay was higher for twice-weekly collection than for three times weekly collection. The accuracy of machine sorting was the first variable introduced in this study, and although the willingness-to-pay amount was higher for 85% accuracy than for 75% accuracy, 95% accuracy had a lower willingness-to-pay amount than 85% accuracy. Thus, it is clear that residents do not judge that a higher level of service is sufficient, but rather they want the introduction of an optimal garbage sorting and collection service, taking into account the additional cost burden associated with improved service, and this can be said to be a result of this study.
