Abstract : A high rate continuation of converting an agricultural land into a non-agricultural in many parts of the world will threaten food security program, stability and comfort in spatial planning and in both natural and social environments. This research analyzes the causes and impacts from land conversion in suburb areas (with thirty research samples from rice farmers) and country side (with thirty research samples from fish farmers). Data analysis methods used are frequency tabulation and descriptive analysis. The result shows that economic factor is the main cause to convert a land, with 77.8% because of a higher economic value in urban areas and 50% because of economic pressure in rural areas. Secondly, 16.7% because of population growth and myopic behaviours for urban areas and 33.3% because of job transition for rural areas. The other causes are due to aging population and inheritance rights. Therefore, land conversion happens because of economic decisions, limited job opportunities and aging population. The impact of land conversion is a decrease in land size owned by privates, a decrease in production, incomes and social work values. Based on its causes; the economic, sociopolitical, technology and education tools can be used to control the rate of land conversion. Keywords - Urban Area, Rural Area, Agricultural land, land conversion, Aceh
