Abstract : Couples in a successful marriage master the skills of harmony in their relationship. Guidelines and boundaries are set to achieve marital harmony and emotional tender care. Marriage implies the commitment of two adults’ man and woman who come together with the approval of parents and kinsmen in accordance with their native custom and religious faith. Previously, marriage was more of a people’s traditional laws. With the advent of Christianity and other religions most marriage rules that are counterproductive were expunch to be in line with modern practice of marriage. Today, there are few communities who are still in deep practice of olden ways of marriage rites. This paper is looking at the Becheve cultural marriage which is still captive of the girl-child freedom of choosing a spouse. The focus here is to introduce counselling strategies to intervene and liberate this young maiden from the northern part of Cross River State, Nigeria from the bondage of marriage slavery by parents and suitors in the name of culture. The process of bringing in counselling practice is to realize the state of being united to the opposite sex as husband and wife in a consensual and contractual relationship recognize by law and modern trend in a marriage relationship for couple’s enjoyment not endurance. Keywords - Jungle Marriage, Money Marriage, Trial Marriage and counselling strategies for a successful marriage.
