Measurement and Node Placement for Interference Reduction in a Smart Home IoT Network

Abstract
Abstract - The internet of things (IoT) is envisioned to change the landscape of communication networks in this decade. The plethora of devices which are being manufactured to access the network in buildings at homes, schools, businesses and outside will generate a large volume of traffic. It is expected that hierarchical networks will be formed to address the connectivity needs of the new devices. For the new networks devices must work together to make maximum use of the available bandwidth. This paper addresses interference generated outside an in-home network by devices’ positioning inside the home. The signal received is calculated using a 3D ray tracing simulator. Physical properties of the building such as walls and windows are simulated to show how their position relative to an Internet of Things (IoT) device will affect the received power outside the home. The value of SINR for all the possible locations and the maximum value of SINR for the transmitted signal also being calculated. Thus, and based on the collected results we will be able to determine the best location for the transmitted signal inside the house which will satisfy a decent coverage area for the house and less amount of outside leakage power in order to protect the network.
