Abstract : Economic activity can be studied using network analysis. In this methodology, the primary objective is to
understand the relationships between economic entities. However, most studies in this emerging field of multidisciplinary
study tend to focus on high-level aggregations such as trade between nations or communications between authors, or other
social constructs. This research uses network analysis to better understand the number and types of economic relationships
within a prescribed area of a city (San Antonio, Texas), which should help describe the productive structure and employment
needs and thus the economic vitality of the neighborhoods that comprise an urban area. We isolate segments in San Antonio,
Texas using ZIP Code-level data and study these with new techniques and technology-based tools to compare two segments
of the urban area. We find preliminary evidence that connectivity and knowledge play an important part in urban
development.
