Abstract : South African cities are predominantly maintained and developed in the form of conventional infrastructure and the associated conventional funding thereof. The promotion of sustainable practices in urban development is not necessarily coupled with alternative or sustainable forms of financing. Although the public sector will always remain the key initiator behind infrastructure development, various mechanisms of financing, along with applicable financing partners and the basis of investment, will be required so as to address future sustainable cities. This paper proposes a framework to investigate the financing of sustainable cities in South Africa. Keywords- Financing, framework, sustainable cities
