Abstract : Water is material basis of human existence and an indispensable resource for the development of human society. Therefore, development and utilization of water resource plays an important role in production and life of human society. There exist various ways for development and utilization of water resource. Reservoir construction is one of the ways. As with exploitation and utilization of any other resources, development and utilization of water resource also bring about environmental problems. In this paper, large and medium sized reservoirs in Hunan province and Jiangxi province, which are located in hilly areas in southern China, were used as an example to analyze the influence of construction of large and medium-sized reservoir on environment. Data used in this study came from related literatures and field investigation. The conclusions of this paper have certain reference value for environmental impact assessment of large and medium-sized reservoir construction, promoting development and utilization of water resource, and environmental protection. Index Terms—Water Resource, Development and Utilization, Large and Medium Sized Reservoirs, Environmental Impact, Hilly Areas.
