Elder Abuse in Thailand: Prevalence, Causes, Consequences, and Public Supports

Abstract
Thailand has become the aging society since the number of older person has increased constantly. This trend leads to changes in belief, value, and attitude towards elder. Elder people have been perceived as less important in a family resulting in a family conflict which is inevitable according to the poor relations among the family members. Some elders have been abused in various forms such as physical abuse, psychological or emotional abuse, financial or material abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect. This violence is caused by many risk factors depending on different cultural contexts. This situation has been consistently increased and many elders are vulnerable as victims of the violence. The Thai government has provided support for the victims of this violence. However, the issue recently cannot be solved. Suggestions and recommendations for policymakers and related stakeholders are discussed in this article. Keywords - Violence, Elder, Family Violence, Elder Abuse
