Paper Title
The Situation of Care Recipients and Educational Support for Family Caregivers in Northen Thailand
Abstract
Objective
The trend of population aging in the 21st century is especially prominent in Thailand.Family members feel responsible for
providing care with no skill and knowledge with limited resources. Nevertheless, they are required to offer a broad range of
assistance. Therefore, family caregivers go through a considerable amount of distress in their efforts to provide long-term care
elderly. The aim of this study was to describe the situation of care recipients and educational support for family caregivers in
Northen Thailand.
Methods
In total, 314 self-administered questionnaires were distributed to the elderly volunteers engaged in elderly home care in
Nakhon Ratchasima Province, Thailand. The questionnaire mainly focused on socio-demographic factors, training experience,
the care recipient’s demands, and content of the care provided.
Results
The questionnaire showed that majority of family caregivers were female (77.7%) and half had training experience. Among of
them most courses comprised of nutrition, exercise, and transfer technique. Regarding providing care, the majority offered
IADL care, BADL (essential daily care) care and home care.
Conclusion
Offering opportunities of sharing their experience to enhance community support, educational training for ADL and dementia,
and regular comprehensive medical checkup for early discovery of those with heavy care burden may improve their quality of
care and in turn, alleviate their feeling of burden.
