Productivity Growth of Indian Commercial Banking: A Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) Approach

Abstract
This study applied DEA based Malmquist productivity index to compute total factor productivity growth and its indices among commercial banks in India for the period 2001-11. This paper attempts to quantify the magnitude of total factor productivity change. The performance of public, private, and foreign banks has been observed to see the risk taking behaviour of market participants. The empirical results obtained using DEA based Malmquist approach indicate that after initially adjusting Indian banks have experienced sustained productivity growth driven by technological progress. Banks ownership structure seem to have an impact on the bank efficiency but has not impacted the Total Factor Productivity (TFP) change. Keywords: Indian banks, Productivity Change Malmquist Index.
