Abstract : In cognitive radio networks, spectrum sensing is a fundamental component. The widely used energy based
spectrum sensing scheme is highly vulnerable under multipath fading environment and low signal to noise ratio. The energy
based detection method that use double threshold for channel sensing tend to perform well but it’s performance severely
degrades under noise uncertainty environment and fading channel. The existing eigenvalue-based spectrum sensing method,
which employs single threshold overcomes the noise uncertainty problem in spectrum sensing. However, its performance
deteriorates at low signal to noise ratio. In this paper, an eigenvalue-based double threshold channel sensing scheme is
proposed. The two thresholds are used in the proposed method are obtained from random matrix theory by quantifying the
ratio of eigenvalues of sample covariance matrix of received signal. The proposed spectrum sensing scheme outperforms the
existing eigenvalue-based spectrum sensing and conventional energy based channel sensing scheme as shown by simulation
results.
